2011 Golf Event Recap

We have set the bar high when it comes to our event each June. Knowing that gives us the added pressure we need to try and outdo ourselves each summer.  This year, we feel we lived up to our high standard!

Friday night once again was electric.  The Elk’s Lodge is a great teammate and the food was incredible.  The late Vaughn Wright gave the Invocation through a video he made for us as a gift last year. What an inspiration and such a timeless prayer.

Shawn Green’s testimony hit home as the Bernie native gave us a recap of his battle with this horrible disease.  NO doubt this hero is surrounded by some great people who have helped make him the man he is today, capable of kicking cancer in the pants. Brian Holman followed and amazed the audience with a lifetime of adversity, success, loss, and playing the game of life like your hair was on fire!  The Auction was awesome this year, raising $11,110!!!!  Gary Rhine, thank you very much for this idea.  Also thanks to Mark Robertson for filling in as Gary beats cancer.  The BUZZ took over from there and everyone seemed to have a fun night hanging, dancing, and singing along!

Saturday’s golf was smooth, with 344 golfers filling the course with fun and excitement.  FUNdraisers on the course included a Lemon-aid Stand, Birdies for Breast Cancer, Beta Sigma’s Watering Hole, Montgomery Bank’s 17th Las Vegas Hole, and our picture hole which featured a signed Keith Urban guitar up for raffle.  Our 7th golf cart was also raffled off during the day. All in all, what a long, hot, 100 degree day full of fellowship and fun.  Ben, I know, was smiling down big time seeing this.

We just wish to thank everyone who plays a part in putting this on.  Our team of volunteers, sponsors, and participants is deep into the hundreds and we appreciate all of you.

First glance at a total looks to be somewhere around $114,000.00 with more coming in!  We do have to pay a few bills, and then the love offerings will be heading for their homes!

Thanks again…until next year!
Scott

18 FORE Life Roundup!

Almost time!  One week from now, many of us will gather in Dexter to Celebrate, Give and Remember throughout the weekend of June 3-4.  We are excited and confident this will be one of our best events to date.  Here are some things to plan for and look forward to!

The banquet is shaping up to be a great night as usual.  Brian Holman is a pro and has one heck of a message.   Shawn Green is amazing in his own right and if you got to read the article in The Daily Statesman, you already understand Shawn “gets it”!  The Live! Auction will have items in it including a Sheryl Crow signed guitar, a hood panel from Dale Jr’s 88 Car, items from John Daly, Bubba Watson, Ian Poulter, John Cena, and several others.  The BUZZ will follow and close out the night of fun with some of your favorite Rock N Roll songs.

Our golf event is full!  86 teams of four have signed up.  We thank those of you who pre-registered and choose to make things easier on our volunteers.  If you have not paid up front, please get there early so we are not waiting on you to get through the line before teeing off.  If you are using one of our carts, they will be down near the driving range and we ask that you take them back to where you got them from when the event is over so we can have them ready for the next round!  There will be NO MULLIGANS this year and hopefully this will speed up play.

There will be plenty of fun, however, with the following holes worth noting:

  • 3-Ladie’s Long Drive
  • 4-Birdies for Breast Cancer-buy a PINK Ball and hit from the Red tees/keep the ball!
  • 6-Closest to the PIN
  • 8-Beta Sigma Jello Shots/Watering Hole
  • 9-Men’s Long Drive
  • Clubhouse-Golf Cart Raffle!!!!  Cart is beautiful and will be given away Saturday night/Need Not Be Present to Win!  You can also get tickets by stopping in at Allen Christian!
  • 11-Closest to the Pin-2nd Shot
  • 14-Closest to the Pin/Team Photo/Keith Urban Signed Guitar raffle-Need Not Be Present to Win
  • 17th HOLE-Famous Montgomery Bank sponsored hole/Vegas Theme/Elvis may even be there!
  • 18-Long Putt
  • Silent Auction will be going on throughout the day and prizes will be given out after dinner.

This is going to be a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone in Dexter.  Here is to a safe, fun time together raising money for a worthy cause.

If you think of any questions, please call or email!  And remember:  Hit You A Good One!

Great Contributions!

We want to recognize a couple of contributions made to 18 FORE Life recently. We think that both of these are great examples of simple ideas that help tremendously in our fundraising efforts. Remember, it ALL counts.

Thursday, March 31st was also a special day. It was one of those events that was actually thrown together, but seemed as if had months and months of planning behind it. The idea was simple. The Dexter 7th and 8th grade Volleyball team would host Poplar Bluff. But this would be NO ordinary game night. A pink volleyball would be used, pink whistles would be blown by the referees, pink socks and headbands worn by the players, raising awareness and money for 18 FORE Life! These young ladies not only kicked a ton of butt on the courts, sweeping PB in both matches, but they gave a championship effort behind the scenes decorating the gym and asking the community for items to be used in a silent auction. All of the work went into raising $2100.00 for 18 FORE Life and showed everyone in the gym that night that more was taking place than just a volleyball game. This amount will allow us to send out two love offerings to families on behalf of these thoughtful girls. By the way, if you haven’t seen this group play ball, you are missing something special. Both groups are not only undefeated, but have yet to lose a set.

We wish to thank coaches Melissa Hahn and Kara Lummukka, the players, their parents and the entire community for getting behind this event. Next year, the Dig P!NK game will be held at the Bearcat Event Center and is sure to grow and grow!

Eric Boles is not only running in the Music City Half Marathon, he is raising money for 18 FORE Life by getting folks to sponsor his efforts. His goal was $1000.00. Eric just met that goal and presented Scott Kruse with a $1000.00 check.  The $1000.00 will be sent out in a love offering on Eric’s behalf to a family in need of help as they battle cancer. Thank you Eric and good luck!

2011 Charity Golf Event Banquet Lineup

Brian Holman

At this time, we would like to announce former Major League Baseball Pitcher Brian Holman as our guest speaker. You can view this YouTube video to learn more about Brian’s incredible baseball story. Add in a personal cancer story and you will know we are going to be in for a night of motivation, inspiration, courage, and hope…just as we have all come to expect and appreciate.

After a successful Major League Baseball career with the Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, and Mariners, Brian was forced to retire due to an arm injury. Brian began his business career in 1995 and is currently the Managing Director of the Kansas City, KS office of Ronald Blue and Co. He is involved with many non-profit and philanthropic organizations and is a highly repected motivational speaker. We look forward to having Brian as our guest at Friday night’s banquet and also seeing him on the golf course Saturday morning.

Shawn Green

Our love offering recipient guest and speaker is none other than former Bernie resident Shawn Green. You will remember Shawn as one of “The Twins” from the Bernie Mule’s basketball teams of the early 1990’s. A chronic headache led him to the worst headache of his life. He and his wife went to the ER and an MRI was done. Shawn was diagnosed with a large cancerous brain tumor.  A major surgery, loads of chemo and radiation, and a positive attitude has allowed him to experience the biggest victory of his young life.

Shawn, who now lives in the Chicago area with his wife, has battled and beaten brain cancer. His drive and enthusiasm for life matches what you will remember of him on the basketball court back in the day.

We’re incredibly excited about this year’s banquet! This is so much more than a golf tournament and we will prove it to you in June.

Becky Dennington Inspires with the Fight and with the Pen

The following was written by Cory Blocker, a great supporter of 18 FORE Life and a friend of Becky Dennington.

In July 2010, Becky Dennington was diagnosed with breast cancer.  Becky started an online blog where she was able to have “therapy” from this life changing illness.  She named her blog….Deep Thoughts by Beck.  Her blog began as a way for Becky to process her thoughts and feelings of dealing with the stress of a cancer diagnosis. She soon found it was a wonderful way to keep family and friends updated on the progress of her treatments and in time, was blessed to see that it began to encourage women she knew to be more proactive in early detection. As word began to circulate about her wonderful ability to capture this journey, she gained followers and was beginning to inspire complete strangers who were beginning their diagnosis of cancer.  LazyDay Publishing in Reno Nevada came across Becky’s blog and wanted to turn her masterpiece into a book.

Becky lives in Bernie, MO where she married her best friend, Kelley.  They have two children together.  Becky is a nail technician and owns Tips to Toes in Bernie.  Becky is an 18 FORE Life love offering recipient.  Her book “Me and the Ugly C” will be launched Oct 1, 2011 just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month!  LazyDay Publishing has graciously offered to donate 100% of their profit to 18 FORE Life Charity.  We ask the 18 Fore Life family to support LazyDay Publishing authors as this act of kindness is just simply amazing!.  LazyDay Publishing launches eBooks through various websites such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble and All Romance/Omnilit

Year End Donations

After hearing several news stories on charity rip-offs, we thought this would be a great time to remind you of the benefits of making contributions to 18 FORE Life. Unlike other charities with extreme overhead and CEO six-figure salaries, our money is used to help families YOU know battle and fight cancer. We have no overhead other than stamps and we certainly have no paid help. The money we raise isn’t sent off and we are not limited in anyway when it comes to helping out people in need. Finally, as a 501-c3 organization, your donation is tax-deductible!

As 2010 comes to a close, we are within a few thousand dollars of giving away $100,000.00 in love offerings. It is still hard to believe a grass roots organization can accomplish something like this year after year. Then again, knowing the people who support what we do and being from a community as generous as ours, none of this should continue to surprise us.

What a great time of year. We wish you a very Merry Christmas season and when it comes to 2011, the plan is coming together for another incredible weekend of events on June 3-4. Mark your calendar and know that we sincerely appreciate and cherish your friendship and support.

Cheers!
