Our History

While partying like Prince in 1999, a small band of brothers (Scott Kruse, Ben Kruse, Jake Barge, and Kip Musgrave) came together to create a charity golf tournament that would be regarded as an annual homecoming event. We wanted to help others while bringing people together for a good time. The V Foundation, named in honor of legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano, was the charity to which we would donate the money. This organization has its own team of doctors who are committed to curing cancer of all kinds. And as a bonus, the V Foundation has an inspiring motto that fits the spirit of 18 FORE Life: “Don’t give up…Don’t ever give up!”

After our “Rookie Year,” an influential sponsor asked if we kept any of the money local. This question sparked a terrific idea that turned 18 FORE Life into an impactful charity focused on our community. Moving forward, we would support The V Foundation but would give most of the money to local families fighting cancer. These “Love Offerings” have become an inspiration not only to the families who receive them but to the army of volunteers who are working hard to do more!

Our mission statement is: 18 FORE Life will get as many people together as possible to play golf. We will celebrate the gift of life by helping others in need while raising as much money as possible. Our charity will always be called 18 FORE Life, but now we are more than just a golf tournament. In 2005, we began hosting a weekend of good times and great FUNdraising. The festivities are now called The Ben Kruse 18 FORE Life Charity Golf Event.

We have grown throughout the years and so has our impact! Besides the Charity Golf Event, we also have the following throughout the year:

  • The Ben Kruse Crappie Tournament
  • Hits for Hope
  • St. Jude Marathon
  • The Mouse Races
  • Kentucky Derby Party

18 FORE Life has given over $3.4 million dollars to hundreds of families, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The V Foundation, and Coaches for Cancer. Until there is a cure, we have more work to do!
